NON-VITAL BLEACHING
I. Check endodontics
A. X-Ray’s
B. Do not bleach if negative signs or symptoms are present
II. Protect the soft tissue
III.Open the tooth
A. Clean
B. Remove pulp and discolored dentin
C. Seal gutta-percha subgingivally
D. Reduce gutta-percha 2-3 mm below gingival margin
E. Remove internal restorations that prevent bleach from being in contact with tooth
structure
IV. Seal gutta-percha and subgingival tooth structure with
A. Light-cured glass ionomer, or
B. Bonded composite (White)
V. Polish enamel
VI. Bleach the tooth (internal and external)
A. Gel bleaching
1. Fill pulpal chamber and cover entire external surface
2. Change the gel every 12 minutes (3-4 applications = 1 treatment) 36 to 48 minutes

3. Temporize
4. May need second appointment
B. Optional “Walking” Bleach procedure (internal only)
1. Place 35% H2O2 gel in tooth (it is not necessary to use the #9
enhancer when performing internal bleaching)
2. Seal the tooth with composite
C. Combined – you may perform both procedures in one visit
D. With walking bleach technique re-appoint patient in 2-5 days.
