Wear Green for St. Patrick’s Day – but not on your teeth!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Acme Dentistry! On March 17th we will all be getting the green and the shamrocks out again to celebrate St. Patrick with parties, parades and treats. You may be planning a party of your own or an outing to celebrate the holiday, but have you considered your dental needs in the preparations? Could a St. Patrick’s Day party actually damage your teeth? The answer is yes! We all love to treat ourselves on holidays, but a heavy dose of artificial food coloring and sugar is hard on your teeth, and those two things are often present in St. Paddy’s treats. Here are some tips to consider this March to make sure you don’t neglect your smile:

1. Avoid green food coloring. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day many people participate in the “wearing of the green.” This usually means adorning green clothes, but it also sometimes includes adding food coloring to our party treats to make green cookies, cakes, frosting and even green drinks. These look festive, but adding artificial food coloring to your food can really damage your teeth. This is especially important if you have recently had your teeth whitened: directly after bleaching, your teeth are more susceptible to staining, and you should stay away from heavily colored foods – or you may end up with a green tint to your teeth!

2. Go for natural green foods instead. Avoiding artificially colored green foods does not mean you can’t have an array of green dishes to celebrate with a beautiful spread. Consider naturally green foods instead when you plan your festive menu: decorate the top of your cake with white icing and kiwi slices, top cheese and crackers with green grapes, or make guacamole for a party dip. These will be just as green, just as beautiful, and healthier for your teeth. Doing this will also help balance your food intake, making sure you get protein and vegetables in addition to carbs, which cause sugars to build up on your teeth. If you really can’t resist adding in a little green, use minimal amounts and make sure to brush your teeth after eating.

3. Consider drinking a dark colored beer. Dark-colored beers cannot be dyed to look green, hence eliminating the problem of green food coloring staining your pearly whites.  Besides those delicious sweet treats, the sugar content of another St. Patrick’s Day favorite warrants an extra brush before bed: beer.  Many people will be drinking green colored beer on St. Paddy’s Day that’s been dyed green with food coloring.  To wash off the effects of the beer and prevent the green dye from staining your teeth, try to drink water in between each glass of green beer. Your teeth will definitely thank you for it.  Look after your teeth following a large intake of sugar. As with any holiday, it is especially important to brush and floss your teeth after a celebration to get rid of all that sugar and bacteria from your mouth. Tooth decay is a huge problem related to alcohol consumption because when the sugar in the beer combines with the natural bacteria in the mouth, they form an acid that attacks the enamel in the teeth. It also causes your mouth to dry up, decreasing the saliva that helps reduce cavities.
